VITAMIN B12 WHY SHOULD I TAKE IT?π
A few weeks ago my husband got a call from his doctor with
the results of a blood test.
He has been on a medication "Metformin" for several years so
blood tests were apparently mandatory.
He the doctor insisted that my husband take Vitamin B12. daily to up his levels.
So being the inquisitive person I am I decided to dig deeper.
Well as it turns out some Prescription drugs deplete our Vitamin B12
As a vegetarian I was curious as to whether I needed to take the supplement as well.
Apparently Meat eaters get some Vitamin B12 from red meat.
Anyway here is what I found!
βοΈMany people wonder if they should worry about their B12 levels. The answer is that most people can benefit from taking a B12 supplement. B12 is an important nutrient made by bacteria. It helps create red blood cells, DNA, and supports brain and nerve health. A lack of B12 can cause tiredness, weakness, nausea, weight loss, irritability, and a fast heartbeatβsymptoms that are hard to trace back to B12.
βοΈTesting for B12 levels can help, but regular tests might miss some deficiencies. High levels of a substance called homocysteine, linked to a higher stroke risk, can also signal a B12 problem. Itβs better to address this early with supplements than wait for severe issues.
βοΈSome people are more likely to have low B12. This includes vegans, vegetarians, people who eat little meat, those over 50, and anyone who has had weight-loss surgery. B12 is absorbed in the small intestine with the help of stomach acid, so if your digestion isnβt working well, you might have trouble absorbing it.
βοΈMeat is a good source of B12, but many people donβt eat enough of it. Fortified foods like cereals and plant-based milk can help, but they may not provide enough. Supplements are a reliable solution. Chewable or under-the-tongue forms work best because swallowing pills doesnβt always allow proper absorption.
βοΈThe recommended dose is 50-100 micrograms daily or 1,000-2,000 micrograms weekly.
Modern water treatments remove bacteria that used to help us get B12, so supplements are often necessary. If youβre not sure youβre getting enough B12 from your food, taking a supplement can help keep you healthy.
