7 HABITS TO PRACTICE EVERY DAY FOR A HAPPIER GUT
Our gut is like a delicate ecosystem. It’s affected by our daily habits, habits that can either make us happy :) or unhappy :(. The good news is we have the power to positively impact our gut.
Let’s look at 7 habits that have a positive effect.
1. CHEW, CHEW, CHEW
A small habit with lots of benefits, It may seem trivial, but it’s not. Proper chewing breaks down the food into smaller bits making it easier for the stomach and intestines to do their job.
Chewing also releases enzymes, helping us absorb the nutrition in our food.
2. KEEP CALM IT SOOTHES YOUR GUT
Stress not only puts a mental burden on the brain, but it also stresses out the gut. Chronic stress triggers the release of hormones that stops digestion. There is a lot of talk about the Gut-brain connection. Read more here.
If you are upset at meal times, try calming exercises like deep breathing or meditation, this will help the stomach stay calm and helps you digest better.
3. MOVE IT, MOVE IT:
Staying active is not just to lose weight or look good, it helps the gut too. Exercise keeps the food moving through the digestive tract and you don't want this stopping at any point, because then you will end up with constipation, and no one wants that. Exercise also helps with increasing the good bacteria in the gut.
4. SLEEP HELPS YOUR GUT REST AND REPAIR:
Sleep makes everything better, when we sleep the body repairs and cleans itself. The gut benefits from this too, sleep regenerates and repairs the gut lining.
5. DONT FORGET TO HYDRATE:
We have all heard how good this is for the entire body. The gut is no exception. Water helps things move through the digestive tract and prevents constipation. It also helps us absorb the nutrients in our food and helps repair the gut lining.
6. CHOOSE THE RIGHT DIET FOR YOU:
You are unique, and so is your Gut. you may choose Vegetarian, Paleo, or something else.
Experiment with different foods to see what makes your gut happy. This doesn’t mean either of these diets are the best. In general, a happy gut thrives on more vegetables and less animal products.
7. AVOID ANTIBIOTICS WHEN NOT NEEDED:
We know that we need antibiotics at times to treat bacterial infections. Unnecessary use disrupts the balance in the gut microbiome, antibiotics don’t discriminate between good and bad bacteria. They lead to an imbalance in the Gut microbiome.
Your Gut health is a lifelong journey. These seven habits are a stepping stone towards a happier gut. So why not start today, your gut will thank you.
